about

A Jon Stickley Trio record wouldn’t be complete without a tribute to their Newgrass forefathers. Birdland Breakdown is a tune by mandolinist, Jon Reischman, and appeared on Tony Rice’s jazz-grass album, “Still Inside”. This song started making its way into the jam circles in Asheville a few years ago, and the Trio decided to put together their own stylistic arrangement using their favorite “bluegrass halftime” groove. Lyndsay’s fiddle shines on this entire track, and Jon and Patrick join her for some unison soloing, something completely new for the Trio. Patrick breaks up the tune with a deconstructed drum solo.

about

Jon Stickley Trio Asheville, North Carolina

“Jon Stickley is a guitarist based in Asheville N.C., and rooted in the flatpicking bluegrass tradition, the quicksilver dialect of Tony Rice and Norman Blake. But in the Jon Stickley Trio, with the fiddler Lyndsay Pruett and the drummer Hunter Deacon, he also bounces around in Gypsy jazz, folk-punk and jam-band territory, tracing a fidgety continuity of style.” -The New York Times, Nate Chinen ... more
